Tips for Spot-Cleaning a Carpet
By Yelena Gertsenova of Denver Cleaning Service
Carpets, especially white ones, show dirt so quickly it feels futile to clean them. Luckily, with a little efficiency and vigor, you can spot clean most stains yourself. It doesn’t matter how spotless you keep your home, one carpet stain in an obvious area ruins the look of an entire room. The offenders, red wine, coffee, shoe polish, all ruin carpets without remorse. Here’s how you make sure a small spill doesn’t become a permanent blemish your carpet and reputation! 1. Contain the spill. If it’s liquid, take a clean, white, absorbent towel and place it on the spill. Blot. Never rub, just blot. Absorb as much as you can into the towel until the spot is as dry as you can make it. It’s best not to use your best linens for cleaning carpet stains, as they may ruin when contacting wine and other substances. But the towel must be white so you can how much of what spilled transfers into the towel. Furthermore, colored towels transfer their dye into the fibers of the carpet, so you’ll only replace one stain with another. 2. Read and review the manufacturer’s instructions on how to safely clean the carpet. If your carpet has a warranty, a shoddy spot cleaning can lead to a void. Contact a professional if you are still unsure about the details. 3. For food spills, take a tablespoon and use the rounded edges to gently and patiently scrape up any food chunks or particles. Work from the outside in to pool as much as you can out and off of the carpet. 4. Shine a flashlight on the spot to see what’s left in the fibers. Even if the room has good lighting, the extra flashlight illumination helps see into the tiniest hairs. For even a deeper look, shine a black light onto the stain. 5. If you can still see food particles, dig out what you can with the spoon. Or, if necessary, use scissors tiny enough to clean an individual fiber with the help of a magnifying glass. 6. Pour a detergent, solvent cleaner, or degreaser to clean the area, and blot it dry with another clean, white towel. Make sure the detergent is specially formulated for whatever type of carpet you have and the type of stain. If the detergent doesn’t match the problem, yellowing or discoloration may occur down the road. Apply downward pressure with your thumbs directly onto the spot and do not rub, especially with wool carpeting! Carpets dry from the bottom up, so to speed up the drying process, place another fresh terrycloth towel upon the spot and stack a book or two on top. 7. Take the spoon again and push up the carpet fibers so they match the height of the area surrounding where the spot was. 8. For liquid stains, start at step one and skip to step six, and use a different section of the towel for each blot. If the stain still discolors the carpet after a spot-cleaning call in a professional. Quick and immediately action will save your carpet from long-term damage, lengthen its life, and not distract from the ambiance of a room. Spills happen every day, but they don’t have to last forever. Learn more tips and tricks on home cleaning and maintenance at our website: www.DenversCleaningService.com.
